Diffusing - wave spectroscopy in a shear flow

چکیده
We present a new technique for measuring velocity gradients for laminar shear flow, using dynamic light scattering in the strongly multiple-scattering regime. We derive temporal autocorrelation functions for multiply scattered light, taking into account particle displacements arising from deterministic shear flow and random Brownian motion. The laminar shear flow and Brownian motion are characterized by the relaxation rates TS = kol*/ and TB-1 = Dk 0 2 , respectively, where P is the mean shear rate of the scatterers, ko = 2rn/X is the wave number in the scattering medium, * is the transport mean free path of the photons, and D is the diffusion coefficient of the scatterers. We obtain excellent agreement between theory and experiment over a wide range of shear rates, 0.5 sec < P < 200 sec-1. In addition, the autocorrelation function for forward scattering is independent of the scattering properties of the medium and depends only on the mean shear rate and sample thickness when rs is much less than T B. Thus the mean shear rate can be simply determined by a single measurement.

Rejuvenation and overaging in a colloidal glass under shear.
We report the modifications of the microscopic dynamics of a colloidal glass submitted to shear. We use multispeckle diffusing wave spectroscopy to monitor the evolution of the spontaneous slow relaxation processes after the samples have been submitted to various straining. We show that high shear rejuvenates the system and accelerates its dynamics, whereas moderate shear over-ages the system. ...

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and thus at the origin of many deaths by e.g. heart attack or stroke. Hypertension is caused by many factors including an increase in arterial stiffness which leads to changes in pulse wave velocity and wave reflections. Those often result in an increased left ventricular load which may result in heart failure as well as an increase...

We investigate the effects of blood flow and extravascular tissue shearing on diffusing-wave spectroscopy (DWS) signals from deep tissue, using an ex vivo porcine kidney model perfused artificially at controlled arterial pressure and flow. Temporal autocorrelation functions g((1))(τ) of the multiply scattered light field show a decay which is described by diffusion for constant flow, with a dif...

We use diffusing-wave spectroscopy to measure the motion of droplets in concentrated emulsions subjected to a periodic shear strain. The strain gives rise to periodic echoes in the correlation function which decay with increasing strain amplitude. For a given strain amplitude, the decay of the echoes implies that a finite fraction of the emulsion droplets never rearranges under periodic strain ...
